Just Cause 2 is an open-world action-adventure video game developed by Avalanche Studios, published by Eidos Interactive, and distributed by Square Enix. It is the sequel to the 2006 video game Just Cause.

Just Cause 2 employs the Avalanche Engine 2.0, an updated version of the engine used in Just Cause. The game is set on the other side of the world from the original Just Cause, on the fictional island of Panau, which is located in Southeast Asia and covers 400 square miles of land. Rico Rodriguez returns as the protagonist, aiming to overthrow the evil dictator Pandak "Baby" Panay and confront his former mentor, Tom Sheldon.

Gameplay

The player is free to roam the game's open world, not having to focus on the game's storyline. Progress in the game is measured with Chaos, which is earned by completing missions, destroying government property, collecting items for the factions and reaching 100% completion in settlements and military bases. Chaos unlocks new agency missions and stronghold takeovers. Chaos and stronghold takeovers expand the factions' area of influence, which unlocks faction missions and race challenges. Agency missions progress the story, while faction missions are completely optional. Helping one faction does not prevent the player from helping the others.

The artificial intelligence uses a planning system which enables enemies to perform various actions. Enemies can use the environment to their advantage, taking cover behind objects and adapting to the objects around them. Additional elements include vertical gameplay using a grappling hook and parachuting maneuvers and also manual aiming system.

There is also a real-time deformation system and individual components can come loose from vehicles.

Initially, the player must acquire weapons and vehicles in the field. Early in the game, the player encounters a black market supplier, from whom weapons and vehicles can be purchased, with an option to have them delivered to the player's location via helicopter. As more Chaos is gained, additional weapons, vehicles, and the extraction option become available on the black market. All weapons and vehicles on the black market have parameters that can be upgraded in several steps, by building upgrades with weapon and vehicle components found within the game world. There are over 2,000 parts that the player can acquire.

Notable features of Just Cause 2 include the grappling hook, which gives players the ability to tether objects to each other. For example, in a high speed vehicle chase, the player can use the grappling hook to attach a pursuing vehicle to the ground, forcing it to stop and often flipping or turning the vehicle causing damage to it. The grappling hook also allows the player to pull himself, and hold onto objects such as walls or helicopters.

In addition, the player has a parachute which is always ready to be deployed, even if it has been deployed and discarded only moments before. This can be combined with the grappling hook and used as a fast method of transport.

Game Play

Far Cry 2 is a sequel to the original Far Cry. The game features an open-ended experience. Players are able to ally with one or multiple factions, and to progress through the game world and missions as they see fit, resulting in a nonlinear style of gameplay commonly referred to as sandbox mode that allows the story to progress at their speed and in the order they choose. Players can use a range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, boats and hang gliders, to travel within the 50 km2 (19 sq mi) gameplay area. The playing styles range from head-on assaults to stealthy infiltrations and assassinations. The game takes place in a sprawling African landscape, with terrain ranging from desert to savannah to jungle.

The health bar represents the health of the protagonist that is divided into five segments, each of which automatically refills if it is not depleted and the player finds cover for a few seconds. Players carry a limited supply of syrettes which can be used at any time to fully replenish the health bar, and are obtainable from first aid boxes located throughout the game world, specifically at guard posts. When nearing death (only one health bar remaining), the character must perform first aid on himself, for example removing bullets with pliers, or snapping twisted or broken fingers into position.

Weapons

The player also has access to a large arsenal of real world weapons, including battle rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, handguns, and light machine guns. The game breaks these weapons down into three inventory slots, each with a specific list of weapons assigned to it:

In addition to the three selectable types of weapons, a machete is carried at all times, which can be used to execute enemies and the player can also carry a number of hand grenades and molotov cocktails. All weapons in the game are "mirrored," with ejection ports, charging handles and other user-operated parts on the left side; the exception being the belt-fed machine guns which eject to the right, though this means the PK machine gun is still mirrored. Further changes are made to some, such as the Ithaca 37 having a side ejection port.

A major gameplay feature is that these weapons degrade over time. Weapons become dirty and prone to jamming and will eventually catastrophically fail, break in half, and become completely unusable. The player can purchase weapons at various gun shops, which provide an unlimited supply of the weapon in serviceable condition, along with manuals to upgrade weapon's reliability and accuracy. More weapons can be unlocked at the gun shop by completing missions involving the destruction of competitors' arms convoys for the gun shop owner. Weapons can also be picked up off of fallen enemies, but they are always in their most degraded condition and can only be used for a short period of time before jamming and ultimately breaking down completely.

History

Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood is a 2002 stealth-based real-time strategy video game developed by Spellbound Studios. It is similar to games such as Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive and the Commandos series. The player can also control Robin Hood's Merry Men, including Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet, Will Stutely, and Maid Marian. Gameplay

In addition, in every town, the player can give money to beggars, who, when given coins and purses, help by providing hints and tips. Common folk sometimes offer help as well (although this happens very rarely). On the other hand, there are two types of folk, who flee at the sight of a merry man, and alert nearby enemy soldiers. One is a woman, who wears a red apron; the other, a man, who wears a red-and-blue shirt. The greed of enemy soldiers is also limited, with money purses not affecting sergeants, while ale does affect them. Sometimes, money can be found in knights, cavalry units, sergeants, and more rarely, normal soldiers.

Plot

The game starts with Robin Hood, arriving in Lincoln from the Crusades, and finding out that his inheritance has been stolen by the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham. After the player finishes the first and second missions, meets with Maid Marian in the Nottingham cathedral, and subsequently tries to meet with the Prince, it is understood that King Richard has been kidnapped by Leopold of Austria for a ransom, and that the Regent Prince John is unlawfully usurping the rightful king. The responsibility of getting the ransom of £100,000 to save the king falls into the player's hands. In the final mission, Robin must fight the Sheriff, thereby defeating the Prince. 

Characters

Robin Hood

Robin is a good all-around character. He can jump and climb, so he can get anywhere on the map, and he can search bodies and knock out enemies. On the downside, in strategic missions Robin uses a sword, so if he gets into a fight he can only kill his opponent. (In ambush missions, he gets to use a staff.)

Robin requires two punches to knock out officers, most knights, and most black soldiers. All other soldiers only require one punch (this is possibly linked to his combat skill).

Robin is required for every mission except for the one where you have to rescue him.

Stuteley

Stuteley is a good utility character. He can tie up unconscious enemies, and he can unlock doors. He’s useful until Friar Tuck joins you.

Maid Marian

Maid Marian is a little better than the aggressive merry. She heals just like the aggressive merry, but her spy ability is great for scouting.

Will Scarlet

Scarlet looks like a good character because his “catapult” (aka slingshot) can knock out enemies from a distance. But the slingshot doesn’t have much range, and it is difficult to target, and so Scarlet isn’t as useful as he could be. However, the slingshot can knock out an officer with a single shot, and Scarlet does come equipped with a flail, which usually knocks out enemies rather than killing them, and so he’s useful enough to have around in missions where you don’t have Little John.

Scarlet’s slingshot will only daze knights for a moment, not knock them out.

Little John

His staff not only knocks people out, but it has a long range, so he can take on and knock out several enemies at once. Plus, a single one of his punches can knock out any enemy, and he can carry enemies around.

Little John is susceptible to archers. It takes him so long to stop and pull an arrow out of his chest that archers have time to fire again, and so a single archer can defeat him.

Friar Tuck

Friar Tuck and Stuteley are about the same character, since they both tie up enemies and unlock doors. But Friar Tuck has more useful skills, and his weapon is blunt so he’ll knock out enemies rather than kill them. Once you get Friar Tuck, you should use him instead of Stuteley.

Stronghold Crusader Extreme Old and almost impossible, Stronghold Crusader Extreme is hard to recommend even to diehard fans of this RTS series.

You can't go home again. That's the lesson of Stronghold Crusader Extreme, a revamping of Firefly Studios' classic 2002 real-time strategy game Stronghold Crusader. This minor reimagining of an oldie but goodie is several years late for the party, a real-time relic based on antiquated game mechanics and production values. It doesn't even add much in the way of new old-fashioned game content; it simply goes after hardcore fans of the original game with a new Extreme Trail mode of play that takes you up a ladder of impossibly murderous medieval skirmishes.

This is essentially a straight rehashing of the first Stronghold Crusader. Gameplay shows every bit of its age, so what you've got here is an old-school RTS game in which you build bases, gather resources, and grind out soldiers for endless combat. You take on the role of a medieval lord commanding a settlement in the dusty lands of the Crusades-era Middle East, and must build it up by constructing the usual barracks, farms, armories, and mines. Of course, the ultimate purpose is to use this economic backbone to fund an army of knights, spearmen, bowmen, and the like, and proceed to wipe your enemies off the map.

As with most RTS games from earlier in the decade, the skirmish maps in the 20-mission Extreme Trail campaign are all about speed, not strategy. The winner is always the one who can click the quickest, which makes matches play out more like fast-forwarded street brawls than real military engagements. This is actually one of the zippiest RTS games of all time, and spectacularly tough when compared to the nonextreme trail campaign in the original Stronghold Crusader. The pace has been so amped up and the maps so packed with enemies that the combat is frenzied and chaotic.

Expect to be toast early and often if you don't have some heavy playtime with the first game under your belt. Even with this experience (which you can gain here because you get the complete original game along with the supposedly new one), it's amazingly tough to emerge victorious from even a single one of the scenarios. Multiple enemies target you in all but the very first campaign mission, and this array of foes kicks off every match by immediately hurling columns of troops at your puny little village.

Maps cram all of the factions into such close quarters that it's impossible to get started on a reasonable army before the onslaught begins. Enemy armies are typically coming over the hill within no more than a minute or two from the start of a game. It's hard to figure out what you're supposed to do to stop these assaults, given that you're always stuck battling these massive forces with just the handful of knights and archers that you start with. You have the option of dropping in companies of spearmen and macemen on the fly at timed intervals, and can erect walls to somewhat stem the tide, but this seems to only delay the inevitable as steams of enemy columns constantly rush toward your keep. All you're ever doing is keeping your head above water, not building enough strength to take the fight to the enemy.

Other aspects of the game don't fit with 2008. There is an online matching service, but it's hosted through the rather clunky GameSpy Arcade system, and some sort of conflict or bug with our initial install left us without the icon needed to activate this option on the multiplayer screen. The isometric visuals of the six-year-old original haven't been enhanced at all, so you're stuck with pixelated units and a maximum resolution of 1024x768 that stretches the display to the point of blurriness on a widescreen monitor. Not that there's much detail here to blur. Units look like scrambling insects that convulse their way across the bland, blocky landscape. Audio is just as dated. The music is a repetitive martial loop, battles are loaded with tinny metal clashes, and order acknowledgements are repetitive exclamations as bombastic and dumb as something you might hear during the dinner show at Medieval Times.

Only someone who has just stepped out of a time machine will have much patience for Stronghold Crusader Extreme. Aged, formulaic, and spectacularly difficult, the game isn't remotely appealing to a modern RTS audience

Resident Evil 2 If you can brave its shortcomings, Resident Evil 2 is good, scary fun. The original Resident Evil remains one of the PlayStation's most successful games. It was so popular, in fact, that it inspired a slew of similar horror-themed action/adventure games for the system. And while many would cite Resident Evil as the originator of this formula, the fact is that the lot of these games took their blueprint from a PC game, Infogrames' H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Alone in the Dark. Resident Evil 2 is no exception, following the familiar formula of suspense achieved through changing perspective and cinematic camera angles. Its PC lineage may explain why Resident Evil 2 makes a successful jump from the PlayStation, but only if you can accept some decidedly foreign design conventions inherent to console games. Resident Evil 2 begins shortly after the first one ended. Raccoon City has been overrun by the zombies created by the unscrupulous Umbrella corporation. While the heroes of the first game are absent from the story-driven portion of Resident Evil 2, you still have your choice of two characters. Actually, it isn't much of a choice. To finish the game, you must play through each section as both characters. Most of Resident Evil 2 takes place in the Raccoon City Police Station, where both Leon and Claire have taken refuge from the zombie infestation. Inside, you'll solve a variety of puzzles, which mostly involve finding keys to unlock previously inaccessible areas. The puzzles are simple, and you'll find yourself sliding blocks onto pressure plates and fitting medallions into their resting places. Likewise, the action, while graphic in content, is somewhat on the light side. You just point your character in the general vicinity of a zombie and fire your weapon. Neither of these points is a criticism. Resident Evil 2 is an action/adventure that puts emphasis on neither. Instead, its strength is its atmosphere. The game is both creepy and, at times, frightening. The creature designs are good, as there are both gory scenes of zombies feasting on victims, and startling moments of creatures jumping out of nowhere. The translation from the PlayStation is good. The character models are high resolution, though the backgrounds are a bit washed out. The movies, though well rendered, are somewhat grainy, but look better than those in other console ports like Final Fantasy VII. The PC version of Resident Evil 2 includes all the gameplay modes from both the US and Japanese versions of the PlayStation game, and there are enough extras to satisfy you if you still want more once the lengthy "original" mode draws to a close. The PC version also has an exclusive new feature, an art and model gallery that lets you see how the designs evolved. It's not vital by any means, but it's a nice touch. The music is appropriately creepy, with sad piano music floating in and out of the game. The other sound effects don't fare as well. The groaning of zombies is creepy at first, but over time it becomes tedious and repetitive. The voice-overs are terrible, though they seem appropriate in the B-movie setting. Resident Evil 2's origin as a PlayStation game is apparent. The method by which you save games will infuriate PC purists, as it is not only sporadic, but requires an item of which there are a limited number. This is part of the game's design, though, and it would lose much of its suspense without it. But if such conventions annoy you, consider yourself warned. If you can brave its shortcomings, however, Resident Evil 2 is good, scary fun.
